What Not to Pour Down Your Drain (and What to Do Instead)

Clogged drains aren’t just annoying—they can also be costly to fix. One of the biggest culprits? Everyday household items poured down sinks that don’t belong there.

Here’s what you should avoid:

🚫 Grease, Oil & Fat

They might look liquid when hot, but they cool and harden inside your pipes. Instead, collect grease in a can or jar and throw it in the trash.

🚫 Coffee Grounds

They clump together and create thick, sludgy blockages. Compost them instead!

🚫 Eggshells

The sharp bits can snag other debris, while the membrane inside can wrap around it, making clogs worse. Toss them in the compost bin.

🚫 Pasta & Rice

They expand with water—even after cooking. Over time, they can swell and block your pipes.

🚫 Harsh Chemicals

Store-bought chemical drain cleaners may clear clogs temporarily, but they corrode your pipes and cause long-term damage.

👉 Better Options:

  • Use sink strainers to catch food scraps.

  • Collect cooking oil in containers before disposal.

  • Compost coffee grounds, eggshells, and food waste.

By treating your drains with care, you’ll avoid clogs and extend the life of your plumbing system. And if a clog does sneak through? Call Plumb Intended for professional drain cleaning.
